A nobody who allows the war to pass him by, gradually acquires sufficient knowledge to get himself accepted in Resistance circles after the liberation, and is given a post in occupied Germany.
Review:
Compared by its director to Little Big Man, this is also a great film about the Occupation, since it lays bare many of the country's own neuroses regarding its role during the war. Kassovitz is a delight, at once a reprehensible impostor and a charming rogue who acquits himself well in his offices. The style of the film is one of reportage, with newsreel footage and vox pops used to intersperse the various visualized fragments of narration, and alleviate the sense of discontinuity. The tone veers wildly from the tragic to the comic, and back, a mood of playfulness summed up by Trintignant at the end when he asks us: 'Vous trouvez que j'ai l'air naturel?'
