I Want to Live (1958)
Country: US
Technical: bw 120m
Director: Robert Wise
Cast: Susan Hayward, Simon Oakland
Synopsis:
A condemned woman awaits the execution of her sentence on death row, but is moved from prison to prison as the authorities weigh up her appeal against an allegedly trumped up murder charge.
Review:
Overlong, and not really Oscar-winningly acted or easy to follow - though the Academy was won over by the actress's deglamorised performance, or by her previous rejections - this liberal plea against capital punishment based on the story of Barbara Graham was certainly sensational for its day, and studiedly so. Save for the beatings Hayward takes in custody, which still impress because she was a female star, this 'Dead Woman Walking' now seems rather dated.
