Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
(Ice Age 3)
Country: US
Technical: col 95m
Director: Carlos Saldanha, Mike Thurmeier
Cast: Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Simon Pegg, Queen Latifah
Synopsis:
As Manny prepares to become a Dad and Diego wonders if he should go off and rediscover his hidden beast, SId adopts three stray baby dinosaurs and winds up in a lost underground world of jungle and lava, from which the others must rescue him.
Review:
After a slow start this third instalment in the increasingly ungeological franchise works up to some thrillingly animated sequences and introduces an entertaining pirate weasel, voiced by Pegg. The screenplay toys with notions of parenthood and group vs individual action, and there is much made of Scrat's dilemma of love vs food; the animation catches details like the glossy sheen on the animal's fur perfectly, and there are colour effects a-plenty to ring the changes from the more monochromatic ice world. Finally, the makers jokily pack in references to the Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises.
