In the Bedroom (2001)
Country: US
Technical: col 131m
Director: Todd Field
Cast: Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Stahl, Marisa Tomei
Synopsis:
A Maine fishing community is shaken by the murder of the son of a local professional couple, and when a manslaughter charge seems likely the tension in their marriage reaches crisis point.
Review:
One of a number of films (The Deep End, The Pledge) dealing with families reaching a defining moment against a natural backdrop, and similar to the contemporary Italian film, The Son's Room, save that here the parents have someone to hold accountable. Nevertheless it is without the obvious pitfalls, declining to depict the killer's violent assaults and so denying us a villain in the classic sense; the effect on the parents' relationship is also handled convincingly, as they dredge up accusations about their respective parental roles in the present disaster.
