In the Heat of the Night (1967)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 109m
Director: Norman Jewison
Cast: Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, Lee Grant

Synopsis:

A Philadelphia homicide detective is seconded to aid a Mississippi police chief in the investigation of a murder, but tensions flare among the locals because he is a negro.

Review:

Just the film to air the message of racial tolerance for the decade of Civil Rights, though ironically it is the bigoted Steiger character which provides the actor with the Oscar-worthy role, while Poitier merely delivers an irreproachably professional performance of a character he had played many times before: the acceptably clean, handsome and noble black man that white audiences could accept. The script is an ideal blend of mystery thriller and racial drama, with Jewison giving a febrile edginess and formal sweep to the visuals.
