Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 124m
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, Karen Allen, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Jim Broadbent
Synopsis:
1957: McCarthyism is in full swing, with some justification as it turns out there is a bunch of Soviet agents moving about undetected close to a US Army nuclear test site... The prize this time is an Inca skull, carved with superhuman (clue) skill from a single piece of quartz, which Indy's former friend and colleague has set out to return to its lost city in the Amazon.
Review:
A corker of an opening sequence is prelude to a retread of former attractions - rooting around in tombs, creepy crawlies, treachery and lots of goons. There is a vehicle chase through the jungle which makes no kind of sense (logical, topographical or narrative) and a weakish finale which fails to match the memories of the Raiders opener evoked. But one has to admire the determination and polish that have been put into producing a belated sequel at least on a par with its predecessors, even if combining the Roswell incident with the search for El Dorado is a bit much even for an archaeologist of Indy's standing.
