Claustrophobically shot, intensely acted cop show on a well-worn theme. It takes itself even more seriously than the thriller to which its western title makes punning reference, and the change of pace from Woo-style shoot-em-ups made it a ferocious hit domestically and a shot in the arm to the ailing indigenous film industry, spawning two sequels in as many years.
