L'illusionniste (2010)

(The Illusionist)

Country: GB/FR
Technical: col 80m
Director: Sylvain Chomet
Cast: animated

Synopsis:

A magician named Tatischeff finds his rabbit-pulling act to be old hat with the paying public, so he accepts an invitation by a drunken Scotsman to play at his local hostelry in the Western Isles and from there travels to settle in Edinburgh for a while, accompanied by the chambermaid who has latched onto him for his apparent capacity to conjure ready to wear gifts out of thin air.

Review:

Based on an unfilmed script by Tati himself, this masterly animation succeeds not only in brilliantly conjuring the spirit and person of the master out of past and onto our screens, and in producing wonderfully quirky and beautiful images, but also paints a portrait of the livelihood of the itinerant artiste which is shot through with wistfulness and melancholy, leavened with humour.
