Connecticut, the early Seventies: during the course of a Thanksgiving weekend two families in the process of fracturing through non-communication are made to reassess their own importance when freak weather strikes.

At first viewing a painstakingly detailed snapshot of its time, with some adroitly ironic reflections thrown in, this is in fact a brilliantly written movie, gentle and deliberate, and evocatively scored on gamelan chimes. There is a childlike naïvety to its erotic fumblings, whether juvenile or adult, which is at odds with the very sophisticated language used by the characters. Visually it concentrates on the beauty of the natural environment, especially during the storm, but the only one to appreciate it is sacrificed.
