This untypical biopic also permits many of us to reappraise the Thatcher legacy in the light of the decade's considerable challenges, and the generous use of archive footage brings home how challenging it was: the miners, the Falklands, the recession, the IRA atrocities; and while the film's personalized perspective might bring accusations of hagiography, nor do the film-makers dwell unduly on the successes. In any event, the film is dominated by a jaw-dropping star impersonation, for which hair and makeup deserve their share of the credit, and the touching banter of Margaret and Dennis very much reminds us of the human being behind the forbidding public personage.
