The Indian Tomb (1959)
(Das indische Grabmal)
Country: GER/FR/IT
Technical: col 102m
Director: Fritz Lang
Cast: Debra Paget, Paul Hubschmid, Walther Reyer, Claus Holm, Sabine Bethmann
Synopsis:
The Maharaja recaptures Seetha, the temple dancer, and pursues his plan of building a tomb in which to immure her following their marriage. Meanwhile, his brother plots against him, and her lover rots in the dungeon while his sister and brother-in-law attempt to discover what has happened to him.
Review:
The second half of Lang's Indian fantasy shares some of the faults of Die Nibelungen 2 (Kriemhild's Revenge): too many scheming characters, a disempowered hero, and labyrinthine sets leading to large-scale destruction. In short, the plot loses its emotional centre and we are left to contemplate the general woodenness of dialogue and secondary cast members. The colourful and beguiling mise-en-scène remains, along with amusing details such as a decidedly more sprightly colony of lepers since last time, and a spider web which stops his pursuers but gives no pause to our intrepid hero himself.
