The Innocent (2022)
(L'innocent)
Country: FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 99m
Director: Louis Garrel
Cast: Louis Garrel, Noémie Merlant, Roschdy Zem, Anouk Grinberg
Synopsis:
Abel is a young man in turmoil: full of guilt over the death of his wife, he is over-protective of his mother, who teaches drama to prisoners and occasionally falls for them. When she marries her latest conquest, Abel takes to tailing him, with unimagined consequences.
Review:
Garrel's off-kilter relationship drama is about reversal of expectations from the opening scene, and has more than its share of impulsive characters to offset Abel's conservatism. The mix of genuine feeling and laugh out loud comedy is perfectly encapsulated in a scene at a diner, where truth and performance collide in a way that advances two story strands simultaneously. With an excellent cast, the New-Wave director's son takes the familiar French policier and rom-com genres, and fuses them with narrative flair and renewed vigour. The spirit of Jean-Pierre Mocky lives on!
