After Run of the Arrow the Western suffered something of a reaction, and of course went south of the border thanks to Italy; then within a year two films, Little Big Man and this one, dealt with a white man going native. Famous for its excruciating Sioux ceremony of initiation, the film pulls no punches as far as the detail of tribal life is concerned. Harris even came back for more a few years later, with The Return of a Man Called Horse.
