(Les misérables du vingtième siècle)

Country: FR
Technical: col/scope 174m
Director: Claude Lelouch
Cast: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Michel Boujenah, Alessandra Martines, Annie Girardot, Philippe Léotard, Clémentine Célarié

Synopsis:

An illiterate boxer-turned-removal man during the Second World War becomes aware of the novel by Victor Hugo, and of the extraordinary coincidences between his life, and that of his father, and those of Jean Valjean and Cosette.

Review:

A delirious, melodramatic fantasia on the classic story, reimagining it in terms of the twentieth century, with the star in three roles and various other actors playing more than one to point up the parallels. Those of us who thought Lelouch was all played out had a wakeup call, thanks to his sure grasp of the material and characteristically grandiose use of the camera and mise en scène, more redolent of Italian masters such as Visconti and Bertolucci than his own countrymen.
