Mabel at the Wheel (1914)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 18m
Director: Mabel Normand, Mack Sennett
Cast: Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Harry McCoy, Chester Conklin

Synopsis:

Mabel has a tiff with her boyfriend about driving his car, and falls for the facile advances of Charlie on his motorbike. Charlie, however, is no gentleman, and when she rejoins her beau, hires two accomplices to sabotage the motor race in which he is to participate.

Review:

Charlie dons his frock coat from Cruel, Cruel Love and plays a bona fide Victorian villain with a penchant for sticking pins in the other characters. Indeed, just about any semblance of motivation goes out of the window and Sennett and Normand instead go for thrills and spills, with sadly diminishing returns. Feels a lot longer than its running time, for sure.
