Macbeth (2015)
Country: GB/FR/US
Technical: col/2.39:1 113m
Director: Justin Kurzel
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Paddy Considine, Sean Harris, David Thewlis
Synopsis:
The Thane of Glamis is cozened by the witches and his lady into killing the King and his own best friend.
Review:
Trance-like, 'Game of Thanes' Macbeth, given the Dark Age look with lashings of mist and woad, and a striking shortage of castle seats (Glamis appears to be a collection tents pitched around a granary). There is plenty of tricksy stuff about the Macbeths' deceased offspring, lending oft-debated substance to the 'I have given suck' speech, but also some atextual curiosities, such as five witches, not three - if you count their bastard children - a slaughter of the Macduff brood comprised of a chase through the forest and a distressing burning at the stake, and a Birnam Wood which only travels to Dunsinane as wind-borne ash following a forest fire. As in previous versions, much of the poetry is lost, whether cut or mumbled, though the central performance certainly carries conviction. Polanski still carries the crown for this reviewer, however.
