Machine Gun McCain (1969)

£0.00

Country: IT
Technical: col/2.35:1 96m
Director: Giuliano Montaldo
Cast: John Cassavetes, Britt Ekland, Peter Falk, Gabriele Ferzetti, Luigi Pistilli, Florinda Bolkan, Gena Rowlands

Synopsis:

Having served a sentence for armed robbery, Hank McCain is lured by his son into taking on a casino heist for a West Coast mobster who wants more than he is getting from the Organisation. Unprepared to trust anyone, McCain picks up a fresh girl, shakes his minders and mounts the caper on his own. But the arm of the Mob is long.

Review:

Released through Columbia, this is very much an Italian production: fast-moving, no-nonsense in its violence and rough and ready in staging and editing. The machine gun moniker is all but gratuitous, the finale totally unconvincing in its peremptory resolution of both McCain's indifference towards Irene and his ruthless competence as a hoodlum. As such, rather than offer a Charley Varrick-style tale of one man's success in ripping off a Mafia casino, the makers revert either to regressive moralising or modish cynicism, making the whole experience akin to watching a bunch of piranha fish in a tank.
