Mammuth (2010)
Country: FR
Technical: col 92m
Director: Benoît Delépine, Gustave de Kervern
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Yolande Moreau, Isabelle Adjani, Benoît Poelvoorde
Synopsis:
An abattoir worker needs supplementary proof of previous employments to qualify for his state pension, and takes off on his 1973 Munich-made motorcycle on a journey into his past.
Review:
Deadpan, alternately hilarious and poignant road movie, which thus affords an unprepossessing glimpse into life for the underclass in contemporary France. 'Pixillated' is the word, and it does get wilfully off-the-wall at times, but there is much to enjoy in this investigation into a man who initially seems something of a misanthrope, and does not say much to dispel that impression, though his actions once on his trip tell a different story. Depardieu, apparently taking his lead from Mickey Rourke's performance in The Wrestler, wears his hair shoulder length and lets it all hang out, so to speak. (The main character's niece, Solange Pilardosse, a mentally subnormal young woman, tells others to call her Miss Ming, actually the name of the actress playing the role.)
