Marius (2013)
Country: FR
Technical: col 93m
Director: Daniel Auteuil
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Raphaël Personnaz, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Victoire Bélézy, Marie-Anne Chazel
Synopsis:
On the Marseilles quays in the 30s, a bartender's son nurses a secret longing for the open sea, while his childhood sweetheart suddenly awakens in him a different kind of love when she risks becoming fair game for a widower friend of his father's.
Review:
Auteuil's dutiful recasting of Pagnol's Marseilles trilogy opens with this warmly lit, almost theatrical, introduction to the principal characters: César, all bluster but a heart of gold; the tormented Marius, desperate to do the right thing, but unable to bear the self-denial of a life in his father's footsteps; and Fanny, full of love and laughter, and ready to sacrifice her own happiness for her lover's sake. It is a timeless story, even if the bickering between César and his cronies has lost some of its acerbity, and the cast does it enough justice to warrant the trouble, the revelation for this version being Bélézy.
