(La isla mínima)

Country: SP
Technical: col/2.35:1 105m
Director: Alberto Rodríguez
Cast: Javier Gutiérrez, Raúl Arévalo, María Varod

Synopsis:

Andalusia, 1980: two police officers investigate the disappearance and murder of teenage girls. In spite of the fact that one is from the old Spain, and the other wants to sweep the old ways aside, their methods come to draw closer together by the end.

Review:

A superb recreation of a moment in history through the prism of a sordid murder case, Rodríguez's procedural drama eschews some of the thriller elements of such as The Secret in Their Eyes to concentrate on interpersonal dynamics, corruption and an interrogation of state and individual atrocities. The wetland location is a marvellously flat and liminal space in which to strand the characters, who are often picked out and diminished by God's-eye views of extraordinary power and clarity.
