Review:
Like The Elephant Man based on a true case, this is a very different - and less obviously cinematic - affair, though also less theatrical in its presentation of reactions to the deformity. Wwisely free of too much maudlin self-pity on the part of the stricken mother and son, it is well acted (the part did wonders for Cher's career) and nobly and sensitively handled by a director we thought was out in the cold for good (after this he was).
