Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 138m
Director: Peter Weir
Cast: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, David Threlfall

Synopsis:

1805: a British 28-gunner under orders to locate a French freebooter has its wings clipped by the superior vessel but, undeterred, refits and shadows it from the Atlantic to the Pacific, pausing for stops in the Galápagos islands to satisfy the naturalist leanings of the ship's doctor.

Review:

Unostentatiously but exhaustively detailed maritime drama of the old school, though with the twin advantages of enhanced visual and audio effects, and a shunning of unnecessary histrionics. The proto-Darwinian scholarship of the Bettany character and the proud remorselessness of Crowe's old sea captain provide a neat counterpoint of Imperial and modern concerns, and the action scenes are first-rate.
