Mata Hari, agent H.21 (1964)

(Secret Agent FX18)

Country: FR/IT
Technical: bw 98m
Director: Jean-Louis Richard
Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Claude Rich, Albert Rémy

Synopsis:

The Dutch secret agent working on behalf of the Germans falls in love with one of her 'victims', a French army captain, but her superiors do not allow her to quit and she is compromised.

Review:

Not particularly convincing attempt to turn the notorious spy into a lovesick adventuress, with Trintignant wasted as a noble dupe who never really finds out what she has been up to. The shots of the lovers strolling, or running, through the unspoilt fields of the western front, when minutes before he was all but crippled by a shrapnel wound, are unfortunate errors of judgment in what is for the most part a by turns amusing and exciting piece of cloak and dagger. The 'tradition of quality' is very much in evidence, save for the odd ill-fitting costume and poorly behaved property, and the star is at her most beguiling.
