Review:
Beineix meets Godard, or so it seemed at the time. Certainly Carax was the most intellectually provocative of the purveyors of 'le cinéma du look', a critical term for a trend in French cinema which foregrounded the image over the word. The results are often stunning to look at, with lots of primary colours, but carry little emotive weight, and never before had a leading man had such an ugly mug opposite a leading lady so beautiful.
