Meet John Doe (1941)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 135m
Director: Frank Capra
Cast: Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward Arnold, James Gleason, Walter Brennan, Spring Byington

Synopsis:

To save her job when her newspaper acquires new owners, an enterprising columnist invents a story of a depressed hobo threatening to commit suicide if society does not mend its ways. When the item gains traction, they must find someone to embody this fictional John Doe, and before long the paper's ambitious owner sees political applications for the growing movement.

Review:

Echoes of Capra's more notable successes can be found in this satirical comedy drama: a simple, honest hick exploited by media interests, a man driven to despair by his loss of faith in human goodness, an appeal to our better natures and common humanity, etc. The ultimate equation of John Doe (J.D.) with our Lord J.C. gets a little icky, and the montages go on a bit, but given its length the pace never drags and Coop and Stanners are both on fine form.
