Merchant Ivory (2023)
Country: US
Technical: col 112m
Director: Stephen Soucy
Cast: James Ivory, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave, others
Synopsis:
The four-decade story of a unique film production partnership is told in chapters relating to key features of their professional and personal lives.
Review:
An invaluable film documentary in that at least one of the 'actors' is still alive and, miraculously, productive. Others are represented by generous archival material and their living selves as the case may be. Merchant, in a sense being unable to speak for himself, is the most talked about, which can become repetitive, but many of the contributions show insight into the peculiar working practices of film makers who for many years were dismissed under the term 'Laura Ashley' school of film; their product was more varied than that, of course, and no one can say that every penny of their shoestring budgets did not end up on the screen.
