Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (1983)
Country: GB
Technical: col 124m
Director: Nagisa Oshima
Cast: Tom Conti, David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, 'Beat' Takeshi
Synopsis:
British officers in a Japanese POW camp struggle with the homosexual attraction between the commandant and one of their number on the one hand, and the sadism of the Japanese Sergeant Hara on the other.
Review:
The casting of pop stars in ostensibly principal roles is overshadowed by the performances of Conti and Takeshi, who develop a grudging respect for each other as a result of their cultural/moral debates together. But then perhaps this was a deliberate ploy all along.
