Merveilleuse Angelique (1965)

(Angelique: The Road to Versailles)

Country: FR/IT/GER
Technical: Eastmancolor/2.35:1 105m
Director: Bernard Borderie
Cast: Michèle Mercier, Claude Giraud, Jean Rochefort, Jean-Louis Trintignant

Synopsis:

Widowed and disgraced, Angélique finds sanctuary among a band of cutpurses, led by her childhood sweetheart, saves her children from slavery, and thanks to the chief of police's protection becomes a successful chocolatière. Meanwhile her quest for vengeance on the King's criminal courtiers fuels her continued involvement in politics and plans to marry into a new title.

Review:

Busy nonsense, which leaps from one narrow escape to the next romantic encounter with nary a pause before 'cut'. The tortuous plot is thus as breathless as it is unlikely, but at least ensures our continued interest via impressive production values, bloodthirsty violence, and the resplendent Mercier. Trintignant makes a brief appearance as a poet-pamphleteer, sporting a ridiculous pilgrim's wig.
