Mid-August Lunch (2008)

£0.00

(Pranzo di ferragosto)

Country: IT
Technical: col 75m
Director: Gianni Di Gregorio
Cast: Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria De Franciscis, Alfonso Santagata

Synopsis:

Obliged to look after his demanding mother in a modest apartment, Gianni reluctantly agrees to the proposition of the block administrator that he redeem some of his debts by putting up the latter's mother for a couple of days. She is then joined by the aunt and the mother of his doctor for the seasonal Ferragosto luncheon.

Review:

Slight but engaging comedy about old people and their ways, based on the director's own experience with his widowed mother and even filmed in her flat. The son is exhausted from lack of sleep, cooking and attending to their every need, while the women just want to have a good time away from the watchful eyes of their habitual carers. While nothing very much happens, and the film was clearly made on a shoestring, with handheld camera de rigueur in the cramped confines of the flat, its considerable charm lies in the adroit playing of both the director and the four non-professional actresses he found to play the 'le anziane'.
