Midnight Run (1988)

Country: US
Technical: col 126m
Director: Martin Brest
Cast: Robert de Niro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina, Philip Baker Hall, Joe Pantoliano

Synopsis:

A bail bondsman puts up for a high profile defendant who has embezzled millions from the mafia and given it to charity. But when the latter jumps bail he sends first his best, then his not-so-good, bounty hunter after him. There follows a frantic race from NYC to LA to make the court hearing, with the FBI and mafia hitmen vying with our men to nail the defendant first.

Review:

Actually less a comedy thriller than a straight comedy, with De Niro playing it lite and Grodin doing his deadpan schtick very effectively. It's an 'odd couple' situation, De Niro's cynical, self-seeking approach gradually succumbing to his adversary's charm and benevolence. Kotto provides terrific support as an ice-cold FBI supremo, actually all sweats underneath, and the coast to coast format adds some much needed structure to the extraordinary length. Crisply written dialogue, and a welcome lack of obtrusive background music.
