Mindhorn (2016)
Country: GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 89m
Director: Sean Foley
Cast: Julian Barratt, Essie Davis, Russell Tovey, Simon Farnaby, Steve Coogan, Andrea Riseborough
Synopsis:
The washed up star of an eighties cop show grabs at a chance to revive his public profile when the Isle of Man police petition his help in resolving a case on his old fictional stamping ground. Instead he stumbles on a conspiracy using the murder one suspect (and inveterate Mindhorn fan) as pawn. Just as unlikely are his plans to ingratiate himself with the wife he walked out on twenty-five years previously.
Review:
Cringe. The Alan Partridge touch is not far behind this would-be Galaxy Quest meets Johnny English, a fact rendered more blatant by the presence of Steve Coogan in the cast. Unfortunately, writer-actor Barratt is more of a poor man's Kevin Kline, and it is hard to say which is worse, the embarrassment humour of the first three quarters, or the wish fulfilment of the denouement. Well acted by the supporting cast, but not much to take away elsewhere, the comic highlight being Simon Farnaby's Swedish stunt double.
