Minority Report (2002)
Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Super 35 145m
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Tom Cruise, Max Von Sydow, Samantha Morton, Colin Farrell, Tim Blake Nelson, Peter Stormare
Synopsis:
In the year 2054, Washington DC, police control homicide levels by developing a sophisticated 'precrime' unit, equipped with 'precogs' capable of foreseeing when the next murder will take place and who the protagonists will be.
Review:
Reminiscent of the director's recent A.I. in its production details and family-centred plot, but also of author Philip K. Dick's other work to inspire films (Blade Runner, Total Recall) and Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 in its 'system rebounds on agent' structure, this gripping S-F mystery also recalls recent mind-bending time and space games such as Twelve Monkeys, The Matrix and the Spanish Abre los ojos (remade as Vanilla Sky). The idea of the hero meeting his own appointment with fate, like Brad Pitt in Se7en, is actually more satisfying than the alternative setup scenario, but even so the movie keeps one guessing, has a fascinating premise and only one or two gaping holes, and is put together with imagination and considerable skill.
