Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 94m
Director: George Seaton
Cast: Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O'Hara, Natalie Wood

Synopsis:

A sceptical young girl comes face to face with Kris Kringle, working at Macy's, but others are uneasy with someone who really thinks he is Santa Claus, not least the girl's single parent mother.

Review:

Delightful whimsy, inseparable from the era of It's a Wonderful Life and Here Comes Mr Jordan, but reminiscent also of Preston Sturges. There is gentle satire to be had from the department store's decision to go with Kringle's disarming candour about the goods sold by competitors, and the judge who is obliged to rule that there is a Santa Claus for fear of jeopardising his electoral ambitions. The O'Hara character's hostility to make-believe is shown to be bound up with her unhappiness at the hands of men, and she needs the Stewart-substitutute lawyer to convince her otherwise, as he does an extremely cute little Miss Wood.
