Molière (2007)
Country: FR
Technical: col/Panavision 121m
Director: Laurent Tirard
Cast: Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini, Laura Morante, Edouard Baer, Ludivine Sagnier
Synopsis:
The young playwright, pursued by creditors, is rescued from the debtor's cell by a wealthy bourgeois; the latter is desirous of his help in wooing a femme de société by performing a piece of his own creation at her salon.
Review:
A rather knowing concoction of elements from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Le Tartuffe, Le Misanthrope, Les Précieuses Ridicules, etc. all justified by the premise that the fanciful action of the film explains their presence in said works. We could have done without the rather laboured demonstration of this near the film's conclusion, and the lead is in danger of being eclipsed by his more gifted co-star on several occasions, making one regret this film was not made twenty years ago with Luchini in the role; but that said it is a spirited romp that refrains for the most part from going over the top, and Morante lends poignant support.
