£0.00

Country: CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 95m
Director: Philippe Falardeau
Cast: Mohamed Fellag, Sophie Nélisse, Emilien Néron, Danielle Proulx

Synopsis:

Into the lives of a class of 10 year-olds comes Monsieur Lazhar, an inexperienced Algerian refugee who somehow manages to blag his way into taking over from their mistress, who has committed suicide in the classroom overnight. With which event he has just enough time to help them come to terms before he is rumbled...

Review:

Much less cloying than it sounds, this touching film has nobody act cruelly to anyone else for its emotional high notes. Instead, each side learns a little from the other, a process epitomised by the protagonist's device of having them each compose their own fable. Inevitably air-brushed as a portrait of life inside the classroom, it is nevertheless truer to life than its secondary school brethren, which never convincingly confine their story to a single class. And it is exquisitely played by children and adults alike.
