Synopsis:
A farmer's daughter looks after her dying mother and is singled out at school, taking petty revenge on her classmates. Like in Au hasard, Balthazar an episodic, sometimes unfocused structure belies the single-mindedness with which the director pursues his theme of the downtrodden wretch, whose existence is so undeserving of the contempt with which she is treated. Patiently and intensely made, it repays similar attention.
