Moulin Rouge (2001)
Country: US/AUS
Technical: DeLuxe/Panavision 128m
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh
Synopsis:
Paris, 1900: a penniless writer is enamoured of a singer-cum-courtesan and gets a job writing the inaugural production of the Moulin Rouge theatre company, while doing his best to keep the attentions of their wealthy patron away from his beloved.
Review:
Those accustomed to the director's cartoon-like style will not be surprised by the breathless pace of this modern musical in old-fashioned clothing, but even they will be impressed by the finesse of the delivery. The montage is reminiscent of a pop video at times, but the opening evocation of turn-of-the-century Paris is breathtaking in its judicious use of computer technology, and the postmodern appropriation of lyrics and music from countless rock tracks and ballads is a trump card. The stars do a decent singing job; the choreography is as usual nowadays swamped by editing.
