Technical: col/2.39:1 141m
Director: Agnieszka Holland
Cast: James Norton, Vanessa Kirby, Peter Sarsgaard, Joseph Mawle

Synopsis:

In the early 1930s, a Foreign Office attaché who has actually interviewed the Nazi high command is let go, owing to government cutbacks. He then uses his connections to obtain a visa as freelance journalist to the Soviet Union, his aim: to discover how Stalin's Russia has paid for its rapid programme of economic development.

Review:

Intriguingly made slice of history, with extracts from Orwell's Animal Farm voiced over achronologically as ironic counterpoint to the action. The production is extremely persuasive, from the Moscow interiors to the desolate Ukrainian winter landscape. One of a number of films set around WW2 at this time that focused on the bravery of individuals: Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Operation Mincemeat.
