Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 95m
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Carole Lombard, Robert Montgomery, Gene Raymond

Synopsis:

A stormily married couple learn severally, and with consternation, that they are not legally so. How they respond to this news affects of course what happens next.

Review:

No one perhaps was more surprised to find themselves directing a romantic comedy than Hitchcock himself, who had agreed to work with the star (Lombard), and the upshot is doubtless of limited success because it falls between two camps: that expecting a Hitchcock film and the one expecting a screwball comedy. Never mind, regardless of Hitch's journeyman direction, Krasna's script offers enough opportunity for social comment to be of passing interest, satirizing the couple as products of their classes (Spoto). Surely the Pitt/Jolie film of the same name had in mind this earlier comedy of phony wedlock, of a couple which has to learn to fall in love all over again? (Anyone?)
