Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.76:1 185m
Director: Lewis Milestone, (Carol Reed)
Cast: Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando, Richard Harris

Synopsis:

1787: a shop sails from Plymouth bound for Tahiti, to bring back a cargo of bread-fruit, but the Captain's severely authoritarian methods more befitting a time of war cause mutinous stirrings below decks, and first mate Fletcher Christian finds himself caught in the middle.

Review:

This now infamous remake warrants some reappraisal. Made at a time of big budgets ($19 million) when studios were beginning to lose their grip on what audiences wanted, it brought something of a loss for MGM, and that, together with Brando's British accent, brought on a lot of the negative press. However, it was one of the last films to be able to afford real ships and real locations, and seen in 70mm must have been spectacular. Howard is as fine as you might expect, and Brando, even if he does misjudge quite how aristocratic Christian would have been, is a perfect foil for his bluster.
