My Sole Desire (2022)

(À mon seul désir)

Country: FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 119m
Director: Lucie Borleteau
Cast: Zita Hanrot, Louise Chevillotte, Laure Giappiconi, Pedro Casablanc, Melvil Poupaud (as himself)

Synopsis:

A girl takes up work at a strip club and finds the uncomplicated, transactional nature of what she does to her taste. But when she falls in love with one of the other dancers, an aspiring actress, they both come to reappraise their lives in the sex industry.

Review:

A feminine, not say gay feminine, look at a well trodden field, with the expected winks and whimsy (one of which, hinging on the heroine's peculiar gift for undressing people in public, is particularly arresting). The line it draws very strongly is between the 'safe' mise-en-scène of stripping for desperate men, and the insidious, self-lacerating world of prostitution. The love story, which succumbs to precisely those high stakes, is affecting and shot without prurience. This is still a world in which women have the empowering role, however, a point the director arguably makes at excessive length.
