Mysterious Island (1961)
Country: GB
Technical: col 101m
Director: Cy Endfield
Cast: Joan Greenwood, Michael Craig, Herbert Lom
Synopsis:
During the American Civil War a group of Union soldiers escape from a prison camp in a hot-air balloon, with two Confederates. Landing on an unsettled island they must use their wits and bravery to fight common enemies: the unworldly creatures that live there, and pirates!
Review:
This fanciful screenplay, based on a Jules Verne book, would first have us swallow a flight by balloon across the entirety of the American continent to reach the Pacific Ocean, then that two shipwrecked women should happen to make landfall on this undiscovered island at the same time. But then, I suppose Shakespeare did the same with The Tempest. It is of course another Harryhausen/Herrmann collaboration, so there is plenty to engage the eyes and ears. Filmed near Alicante.
