The Man with the Golden Arm (1955)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 119m
Director: Otto Preminger
Cast: Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak, Eleanor Parker, Darren McGavin

Synopsis:

A former junkie card dealer gets out of the pen and returns to his old haunts with the hope of becoming a professional drummer. But what with his clinging, wheelchair bound wife and the girl downstairs tugging him in opposing directions, the old life sinks its claws into him once more.

Review:

This studio-bound melodrama is an extraordinary production to come out of Hollywood at the time, blending the most shockingly realistic details of needles and tourniquets, not seen on screen since silent days, with the aesthetics of the Hollywood musical: a highly staged mise-en-scène, tracking camera, and scenes so overwritten one almost feels the characters might break into song. Suffice to say it has a flavour all its own and, while it might have done with some trimming, the characters grow to be all but family by the end.
