The Manchurian Candidate (2004)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 130m
Director: Jonathan Demme
Cast: Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, Kimberly Elise, Bruno Ganz, Miguel Ferrer, Dean Stockwell

Synopsis:

Survivors of a reconnaissance operation during the 1991 Gulf War are troubled by flashbacks which lead them to suspect that the version of events they remember is not the correct one. Behind the brainwashing lies a plot that links big business with an ambitious Republican senator.

Review:

An updating of Frankenheimer's film that makes some important changes, chiefly that the mother knows what is being done to her son, which itself raises questions of credibility. It's well enough done, and reasonably gripping, but it's hard to see the point of doing it all again, especially since some of the modifications don't really add up to much: a walk in a lake becomes a drowning in a river, Marco becomes the assassin instead of Shaw, who 'asks' to be shot.
