£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 138m
Director: Martin Campbell
Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Stuart Wilson, L. Q. Jones

Synopsis:

In 1820 the Spanish governor of California is forced to leave by a Mexican revolt, and defeats his nemesis, the people's avenger Zorro, at home by slaying his wife and taking his child for his own. Twenty years later he returns to purchase the province from General Santa Anna with gold from the Californian hills, but Zorro frees himself from prison and grooms a successor.

Review:

Historical nonsense which ignores all manner of inconsistencies and implausibilities in the service of expertly choreographed swashbuckling entertainment, but makes the mistake of mingling slapstick violence with plain up-to-date nastiness. But it is well done and the performers are worth watching.
