The Magic Box (1951)
Country: GB
Technical: col 118m
Director: John Boulting
Cast: Robert Donat, Renée Asherson, Maria Schell, Richard Attenborough
Synopsis:
The story of William Friese-Greene, and his pioneering work in moving pictures.
Review:
He was of course a marginal figure in the global race to produce a viable technology, but this endearing film made a suitable subject for a Festival of Britain presentation to His Majesty George V, and Donat is both marvellous and sadly appropriate as the delicately constituted inventor. Everyone lends a hand, but the most memorable walk-on has to be Laurence Olivier's copper, hauled in off the street to witness the miracle birth.
