The Molly Maguires (1970)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 123m
Director: Martin Ritt
Cast: Richard Harris, Sean Connery, Samantha Eggar

Synopsis:

Irish immigrant labour in 1870s Pennsylvania bridles against its mistreatment at the hands of the coal-mining company. Some miners form an illegal organisation devoted to sabotage and worse, so the police bring in a detective to work undercover.

Review:

Professionally made and acted drama with standard excitements, but an odd choice for 1970. It is hard to think this is the same director as Hud and Hombre. The main problem is that it is dull, taking an inordinately long time to reach a foregone conclusion, and Mancini's blarney-inflected score does not help. The makers should have read Germinal first!
