The Music Box (1932)
Country: US
Technical: bw 30m
Director: James Parrott
Cast: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Billy Gilbert
Synopsis:
Stan and Ollie run a delivery company and have to take an upright piano to a house in Beverly Hills. It's up a narrow flight of steps, however, and establishing right of way is their first challenge of many.
Review:
The short that earned them an Academy Award stands as typical as any of the duo's art, with the difference that it is concerned with one idea alone, which it pursues to extremes. They meet with pompous opposition and female derision, and in their childlike impatience for revenge lose sight of the main objective. The extent to which they are blind to the most obvious solutions to their predicament is here raised to that of an artform, albeit a mechanical one with block and tackle!
