(A World without Women)

Country: FR
Technical: col 56m
Director: Guillaume Brac
Cast: Vincent Macaigne, Laure Calamy, Constance Rousseau

Synopsis:

A bachelor letting a flat in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais is disarmed by the friendliness of a nubile mother and daughter. Closer in age to the mother, he is too shy to press his advantage, and there is competition from his friend in the gendarmerie.

Review:

Rohmeresque 'comédie de mœurs' in honour of the quiet, sad sack male everywhere, who scares off the vital beauty by falling in love with her first. Patricia is conscious of her own flightiness, and Sylvain's earnestness makes them wholly incompatible, summed up by the scene in which he awkwardly takes her hand to console her for her own demanding nature! The sting in the tale, though unexpected, smacks just a little of wish fulfilment, but the performances and lack of pretension make this a little gem.
