Nine Months (1976)
(Kilenc Hónap)
Country: HUN
Technical: col 93m
Director: Márta Mészáros
Cast: Lili Monori, Jan Nowicki
Synopsis:
A village girl goes to the city to work in a factory, is accosted and finally seduced by the factory owner. Nine months later she bears his child.
Review:
Mészáros's film appeared at Cannes and made a minor splash with its closing images of the actress actually giving birth. The point was rather that the character she played stood for the many abused women in Hungary, whose fates had been sidelined by the more generalised struggle for freedom from Soviet oppression. The film is strongly naturalistic, as can be guessed, and slow-moving.
